SHS Lady Devils Tennis are Region 1-AAAAA champs

Statesboro will host the first round of State next week. Statesboro has now won 3 region championships in a row.

Mill Creek hosted the Region 1-AAAAA Tennis championships on Tuesday. The Statesboro Girls matched up with Ware County in the semifinals. 

Julia Basquin came out hitting great from the beginning, as she put the Lady Devils up 1-0 with a 6-0,6-0 win at first singles. Naomi Feltman was just behind her as she cruised to a 6-1,6-1 win at second singles, and Anna Washington clinched a spot in the championship with a 6-2,6-1 win at third singles.

The championship was a battle between the Lady Devils and the Trojans of Coffee County. Basquin played outstanding at first singles, as she put the Devils up 1-0 with a 6-1,6-0 win at first singles. Coffee then came back with a win to tie it up at 1-1. Ada Lacienski and Lindsay Collins fell behind 3-4 in the first set before storming back to 9 of the next 11 games for a 6-4,6-2 win at second doubles to put the Devils back up 2-1 with two matches left on court. Feltman was in a battle at second singles after winning the first set 6-3; she was all tied up at 5-5 in the second.

Maggie Proctor and Jolee Jordan dropped the first set at first doubles but evened it up with great play in the second set. 

In the third set, Coffee got up 2-0 before Proctor and Jordan played incredible to win the last 6 games to give the Lady Devils the Region Championship. 

The Lady Devils coaching staff said they are really proud of how the girls competed and were able to play some great tennis with the pressure of playing in a Region Championship,
