This Friday, July 18, 2025 Statesboro friends are invited to join Grice Connect in the annual Shine Like Kathryn Day — a day dedicated to honoring the life and light of Kathryn Mullins through simple, intentional acts of kindness.
Kathryn was my best friend during our freshman year at Georgia Southern. We met in a Bible study, and from the very beginning, she made me feel like I belonged. That year we became inseparable — spending hours at coffee shops and parks, walking campus, sharing our faith, and talking about everything under the sun.
Kathryn was the kind of person who truly saw people. She noticed when someone was struggling, she sat with people who felt alone, she lit up every space she entered with her joy and her quiet strength. She made Statesboro feel warmer just by being here.
When she passed in 2020, her family created Shine Like Kathryn Day to honor her legacy through random acts of kindness. Every July 18, I pass out sunflowers — her favorite — at the places we used to go together. It’s my small way of keeping her light alive in the town where our friendship blossomed, and of reminding others that kindness really does matter.
You don’t have to have known Kathryn to honor her. You just have to live the way she did: noticing others, loving big, and showing up when it matters.
