Sen. Billy Hickman (R–Statesboro).

What a week it's been at the Capitol! I'm thrilled to bring you up to speed on the latest developments from the 2024 Legislative Session.

I had the privilege of hosting a press conference alongside some esteemed colleagues from both the Senate and the House. Together, we unveiled our plans for education reform, a critical initiative for the future of Georgia. Senate Bill 464, aptly named the "School Supplies for Teachers Act," mandates the establishment of a program by the State Board of Education to allocate funds for teachers to purchase essential school supplies online.

Additionally, it calls for the implementation of a universal reading screener in every public school, a crucial step towards improving literacy rates across the state. This legislation is not just about supporting our educators and students; it's about investing in Georgia's future. I want to extend my gratitude to my colleagues for their dedication to bringing forth such impactful legislation. I eagerly anticipate the passage of Senate Bill 464 and its subsequent signing by the Governor.

Switching gears, I'm pleased to announce that Governor Brian P. Kemp has signed SB 332 into law. This bill addresses legislative fixes necessary for the Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifying Commission to commence operations. It's a crucial step towards holding accountable those who shirk their duties to prosecute dangerous criminals. We cannot afford to let politically motivated agendas hinder the safety and well-being of our communities.

I’m also grateful for the opportunity to present my Workforce Development bill in the House Committee on Rules. Senate Bill 497 aims to expand high-demand apprenticeship programs, ensuring that Georgia's workforce remains competitive in today's thriving economy. Additionally, I was proud to present Senate Bill 384 to the House Committee on Rules. This measure positions Georgia as a model state for hiring individuals with disabilities in the workforce—a cause close to my heart.

Amidst the legislative hustle and bustle, I had the pleasure of hosting friends from back home, including the State Champion Southeast Bulloch Flag Football Team and students from gifted programs in Bulloch County. Their enthusiasm and energy remind me of the importance of our work in the Capitol.

As we near the end of the 2024 Legislative Session, it's essential to stay focused on our goals. Remember, on March 28th, we'll adjourn Sine Die until January 2025. Any bills not passed by then will need to restart the legislative process from scratch.

I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for your continued support and prayers. Your involvement makes a difference, and I'm committed to serving you to the best of my ability. Thank you, and God bless Georgia!
