Statesboro Police Department are sounding the alarm as a wave of phone scams targeting senior citizens sweeps through the area. The department recently shared a warning about three specific scam tactics that are becoming increasingly common — and dangerous.
The first involves Social Security fraud, where scammers claim there’s an issue with a person’s Social Security number or benefits. Victims are pressured into giving up personal info or even making immediate payments to "fix" the fake problem.
The second trick is the heartbreaking “Generous Grandparent” scam. In these cases, con artists pretend to be a grandchild in trouble, claiming emergencies like jail time or hospital visits and begging for money to be wired fast — often before the victim has time to think twice.
Finally, fake charity telemarketers are taking advantage of people’s generosity, especially after disasters or during the holidays. These scammers pose as legitimate organizations, convincing victims to donate money that never reaches any real cause.
To stay safe, the SPD urges everyone to:
- Never share personal or financial info over the phone
- Hang up and contact the actual organization directly
- Report any suspicious calls to the Statesboro Police Department at 912-764-9911
Let’s keep our community informed and protect our grandparents, neighbors, and loved ones from falling into these traps.
