Bunyan Morris, will be holding two Art Your Way workshops in February at our Roxie Remley center (31 E. Vine St.).

There are plenty of chances to explore your creative side at the Averitt Center next month.

March 4: Chi-Town Transit Authority

On March 4th, the Center will kick off this music-filled month with a concert from Chi-Town Transit Authority at 7:30 p.m. in the Emma Kelly Theater (33 E. Main St.). Chi-Town Transit Authority (CTA) is an 8-piece Chicago tribute band founded in 2017 and based out of Atlanta, GA. They are dedicated to reproducing the “Chicago” concert experience. The key to their success has been knitting together a highly accomplished team of long-time musicians who truly love the music of Chicago. They have honed their craft by playing over 90 shows at casinos, festivals, performing arts theaters, and music venues all around the southeastern US. This concert is sponsored by Broucek & Colson, Attorneys at Law. Tickets are just $30.

March 4 & 6: Bunyan Morris Workshops

One of the Center's favorite artists and teachers, Bunyan Morris, will be holding two Visual Journals and Altered Books workshops in March at our Roxie Remley center (31 E. Vine St.). Cut, paste, glue, draw, color, paint, and stitch on the pages of your visual journal. Enjoy the fun of creating colorful images and prose in a bound notebook, or sketchbook. An old, discarded book with images is Morris’ favorite to use. Bring your choice of materials such as crayons, colored pencils, paint, markers, hobby knives, scissors, glue sticks, colored papers, magazines, photographs, yarn, etc. This is a learn as you go workshop for anyone who is interested in creating something new from something old. No artistic experience is necessary. The cost for these workshops is $35 + a $10 supply fee. The first will be held March 4th from 10 a.m. to noon and the second will be March 6th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

March 9: Lisa D. Watson Opening Reception

March 9th at 5:30 p.m., the Center will host an opening reception for Lisa D. Watson’s Avant Gardener: A Creative Exploration of Imperiled Species gallery exhibition. Watson is an artist and a gardener. Her concern with human sprawl fuses with her love for plants and animals, pushing her to create multilayered artwork that sparks a deeper awareness of the human impact on nature. Since 2019, with the help of biologists, rangers, and regional naturalists, she has ventured into the surrounding landscapes of the Southeast to study endangered, threatened, and rare plants. In Avant Gardener, Watson probes how the loss of habitat, sprawl, chemical spraying, invasive exotic species, and poachers are changing native habitats into unhealthy and unsustainable lands.

The Main Gallery at 33 E. Main St. is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and is sponsored by Burney Marsh & John Tucker, Bill & Virginia Anne Franklin Waters, Lawrence & Kathleen Smith, Drs. Patrick & Theresa Novotny, The Statesboro Regional Art Association, and Frazier’s Flowers. All our galleries are free to the public. Our Voices exhibition will close on March 3rd.

March 10: Paint-N-Party & ONE: Dan Larkin

March 10th at 6 p.m., we will have our monthly Paint-N-Party. No experience necessary! Just come and have fun with friends and your favorite drink! This month we will be painting a dragonfly among the peaceful cattails. The cost to attend this event is $35 and includes all the supplies needed. Our Paint-N-Parties are held at the Roxy Remley Center at 31 E. Vine St. and are catered and sponsored by BOROTAKEOUT.

Also on March 10th at 7:30 p.m. in the Emma Kelly Theater (33 E. Main St.), we will have our final ONE Series installment of the season, featuring Dan Larkin. ONE is a series of performances highlighting ONE gifted individual. Larkin was born and raised in Cherry Hill, New Jersey (right outside of Philly) and moved to Statesboro from Memphis, TN in 2018. Growing up, he was exposed to many different musicians. He was a singer from an early age, began playing guitar at 15, and had his first gig at 16. His band, Liam and Me, got signed in 2006 with a small indie label, ThriveRecords. With this contract and partnership, he had the opportunity to tour the country for a few years, opening up for big bands at fairly large venues including one show at the House of Blues in Anaheim, CA, opening for Under the Influence of Giants in front of a sold-out crowd of 3,000.

Larkin describes the music he makes as a mix of every genre. But he prefers classic rock, some alt-country, and the singer/songwriter genre. His musical influences include Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Ray LaMontagne, James Taylor, The Beatles, Radiohead, Ryan Adams, and Tom Petty. Outside of music, Larkin has a Ph.D. in Philosophy and is a professor at Georgia Southern University. Tickets are just $20. The ONE Series is sponsored by Brinson, Williams & Groomes Insurance.

March 11: Give It A Spin! Workshop

Interested in pottery but feeling shy about signing up for a class? Come on down to the Roxie studio (31 E. Vine St.) and try our Give it a Spin! workshop on March 11th at 6 p.m. This 2.5-hour session will cover the basics of throwing on the potters’ wheel. All tools and materials provided. The cost is $40. Give it a Spin! is for ages 16 plus.

March 25: Wallace Green

The final event of the month will be a blast from the past. On March 25th at 7:30 p.m., Wallace Green will be live in concert in the Emma Kelly Theater (33 E. Main St.) for their Hometown Reunion Tour. This beloved 90s Statesboro-based band, consisting of Chris Mitchell, Brian Hendrix, and Larry Summerlin is finally coming back together! Wallace Green was founded in the mid-90s, while the members were attending Georgia Southern University. Their first album, Wonderllamasoup, was produced by Mitchell and released in 1996. Before releasing their sophomore album, they signed with Knot Known Records, Inc, a small label in Arizona that produced their follow-album, evandrool, in 1999. This concert is sponsored by Joseph H. Cowart, Attorney at Law. Tickets are just $30.
