The Humane Society for Greater Savannah (HSGS) hosted a ribbon cutting on their new Samson’s Square Dog Adoption & Play Yards last week. The new space will provide about 10,000 square feet of turfed play spaces for dogs in HSGS care to play together and meet potential adopters. Samson’s square consists of 11 separate play yards, 10 of which are connected and can be converted into one large play area.
Samson’s Square was the result of a generous donation made by Robert and Charlotte Mock. The new space was named in honor of the Mock’s late American Bulldog Samson. The Humane Society for Greater Savannah named it a square as a nod to HSGS’s place in Savannah’s history and makeup.
“We are incredibly thankful for Mr. & Mrs. Mock’s generosity and the impact that their donation will make for many years and thousands of dogs,” said HSGS Executive Director Sean Griffin. “Samson’s Square not only will provide a space for more structured play for the dogs in our care, but it will also allow potential adopters to see the animals in a relaxed and fun environment that’s enjoyable for both them and us. We hope to use the space to host events and gather community in the future as well.”

HSGS has long used dog playgroups to help socialize and exercise dogs. Samson’s Square will give potential adopters a chance to see dogs interacting and having fun outside their kennels, which will hopefully boost adoptions. Additionally, Samson’s Square will have pools, toys and play equipment for the dogs to enjoy.
HSGS plans to host a public grand opening for the facility in September with adoption specials, food and activities. Future events will include evening adoption events, fairs, movie nights and fundraisers for HSGS.
HSGS finds homes for 2,500 animals per year and performed nearly 9,000 spay/neuter surgeries last year at Pet Fix Savannah, our onsite spay/neuter clinic. HSGS is the largest no-kill shelter in Georgia outside of Atlanta and offers an array of programs to improve lifesaving efforts at all of our animal rescue organizations in the Savannah region.
