GAME PREVIEW: Homecoming Next On the Docket For Eagles

The Georgia Southern football team hosts ULM in Sun Belt Conference play Saturday afternoon for its annual Homecoming game at Allen E. Paulson Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2:02 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+. The game will also be available via radio on the Georgia Southern Sports Network. Here's all you need to know about the game:

Of Note:

  • Georgia Southern leads the all-time on-the-field series with ULM 7-3, 5-0 at Paulson Stadium, although the 22-16 win in 2014 at Paulson Stadium to clinch the outright Sun Belt Conference title was vacated due to NCAA sanctions. The official series record is 6-3 in favor of the Eagles, 4-0 in Statesboro.
  • The two last met in 2020 in Monroe. J.D. King rushed for 196 yards and a touchdown, NaJee Thompson blocked two punts and Rashad Byrd made a game-saving tackle at the goal line and time expired as Georgia Southern held off ULM for a 35-30 Sun Belt win.
  • In 2015, the Eagles scored three touchdowns late to pull away and win 51-31 in Monroe. In 2016, R.J. Murray blocked a field goal with 1:16 left to help preserve a 23-21 win in Paulson Stadium.
  • Georgia Southern is 31-9 on Homecoming in the modern era after beating Ball State last year.

10: Georgia Southern and ULM have met 10 times before, although only nine count officially.

9: The Eagles have lost just nine of 40 previous Homecoming games at Allen E. Paulson Stadium.

8: GS coach Clay Helton's father, Kim, faced off against ULM coach Terry Bowden's father, Bobby, eight times. Helton was an assistant coach at Florida (1976-78), Miami (1979-82) and UAB (2007-11) when he faced off against Bowden's Florida State team. 

7: Seven different players have caught at least one touchdown pass this year, led by three apiece from Khaleb HoodDerwin Burgess Jr. and Anthony Queeley.

6: This will be the sixth on-field meeting at Paulson Stadium between Georgia Southern and ULM with the Eagles leading 5-0 although the 2014 game was vacated by the NCAA.

5: Five of the 10 previous meetings between the Eagles and War Hawks have been decided by nine points or less. However, the Eagles' average margin of victory over ULM at home is 16.2 points.
