Deer at Any Price: The Recovery of Georgia's White-Tailed Deer

Dr. Drew Swanson, Jack N. & Addie D. Averitt Distinguished Professor of Southern History presented the program on the recovery of white-tailed deer in Georgia.

Dr. Swanson has published numerous articles and essays on the intersection of nature and culture in the American South, including a book entitled: "Remaking Wormsloe Plantation: The Environmental History of a Lowcountry Landscape" (2012), which focused on the Georgia coast. He is currently working on a history of Reconstruction and its memory in the rural South and a book on the consumer culture and technology of American hunting.

The white-tailed deer predates the Ice Ages and is the oldest existant deer species. It became abundant only after the last glaciation when the indigenous Ice Age fauna of the Americas became extinct and competitive and predation pressures were lifted. Its high speed in running, its legendary skills at hiding, and its ability to move silently, reflect severe pressure from extinct American Ice Age predators. The white-tailed deer was formerly greatly reduced in its range and abundance by unrestricted hunting. By the mid-20th century, however, it had been restored to great abundance by game-management measures throughout North America. Today the white-tailed deer is a popular game animal.

Dr. Swanson confirmed there is really nothing but high fencing that will deter deer.  He made reference to the high fencing being installed along I-16 currently to deter the deer.  Things like deer whistles and other gadgets have no real proof of success.

According the the State Farm animal collision predictor, you have a 1 in 86 odds of a collision with a deer. Georgia ranks as the 20th state you are most likely to hit a deer. CLICK HERE to view the predictor.
