Statesboro Mayor Jonathan McCollar addressed the citizens of Statesboro and Bulloch county’s concerns tonight about the substantial increase in rising COVID-19 case numbers here.
He urged citizens to be calm and vigilant in our fight against COVID-19 so that, in addition to staying healthy, we can also keep our economy healthy. The best way to do this is for each of us do our part to slow the spread.
- Maintaining social distance of at least six feet
- Wear a mask or some type of face covering
- Stay home if you feel sick
- Refraining from smoking and other activities that weaken the lungs
- Limit all non-essential travel
- Avoid crowds when possible.
- Patronize local restaurants but try to get to go
- Use curbside pickup or delivery when possible
Face Mask is About Our Health not Our Politics
“It is vitally important that we do all that we can to help our local businesses remain open and strong. We are all on this journey together. However, we can all successfully navigate this journey only if we do it together. Wearing a face mask is NOT a political statement”, said Mayor McCollar.
“COVID-19 could care less about your political affiliation or your views on the world. The only thing COVID-19 wants to do is to survive. The only way it can survive is with human hosts. Be a good neighbor wear your mask to protect not just yourself but caring about your greater community when you are out and about. This is not a political statement but based on science and evidence, it is the best practice, to keep all of us safe.”
He went on to explain, as a leader in our region economically; we must work to stop this virus to not only protect our citizens but residents of surrounding counties that visit here regularly. We need to do what we can to stop the spread in our community and also other communities.
Statesboro is Prepared for the Worse
The Mayor reassured the community that leaders have been working for several months to prepare for the worse and we are ready if that comes. However, if we all start now taking this virus seriously we can stop the spread before we see the worse this virus can bring.
Mayor Applauds Businesses Who are Taking COVID-19 Seriously
“Just this week many of Statesboro’s local businesses have shut down due to potential or confirmed exposures. I applaud these businesses for making that very tough decision to put our community’s health over their profits. I think we can all learn a lesson from these businesses,” said Mayor McCollar.
“Ultimately, it is not just about our health but the health of everyone we come in contact with. It is about the health of those workers in the business and the very survival of that business. We must remain vigilant. Even though our daily routines have returned to somewhat normal, we do not want to be complacent. The virus is still here.”
The Mayor assured citizens that, by working together, we would get through this stronger as a community than when this began.
