Julia Campbell, RN, nurse on the Medical/Surgical Unit at East Georgia Regional Medical Center, was awarded the hospital’s DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Campbell has worked at East Georgia Regional Medical Center since 2017 and has been a registered nurse since 2012.
Campbell’s nomination was very touching, as one of her recent patients described just how compassionate she is. Here’s an excerpt from the nomination:
“I found Julia to be a competent professional with a friendly and caring personality. She projects a sense of caring and compassion for her patients. She conveys the feeling that her patient is the focus of her efforts. These observations are based upon her service as my nurse, but also the observations of her efforts to teach her nursing aide. I truly believe that her teaching efforts will result in a better nurse. She appears to have the talent to teach and learn – not successful without both. Julia is a dedicated nurse and leader, deserving of recognition for her dedication to nursing and teaching. ”
Nominations were reviewed by a committee of nurses at EGRMC. Campbell was selected in recognition of the heroic, personal difference she makes in the lives of patients.
“I wasn’t surprised to read this award nomination for Julia,” said Marie Burdett, BSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer at East Georgia Regional Hospital. “She is a competent, compassionate nurse, and is well-respected among her peers. Julia is an excellent nurse and very deserving of this recognition.”
The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. The DAISY Awards are given throughout the year at presentations given in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors.
“The dedication and sacrifices of our nurses do not go unnoticed,” said Paul Theriot, Chief Executive Officer of East Georgia Regional Medical Center. “Many of us have experienced a nurse’s kindness, devotion, and compassion. Nurses are our everyday heroes, and The DAISY Foundation provides a way for us to shed light on their heroism through this award program.”
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
“When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night, said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, President and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation. “Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at EGRMC are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”
Each DAISY Award Honoree will receive a certificate commending her or him for being an Extraordinary Nurse. The certificate reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.” The Honoree will also be given a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa.
