With the extreme heat indexes, many Senior Citizens in Bulloch County are struggling to keep cool.  Alex Smith, Director of the Bulloch Senior Center a division of Action Pact, shared with Grice Connect that they are receiving requests for box fans from Senior Adults and others in the community. Their supply of fans has been depleted, and they are reaching out to the community for assistance.

If you would like to donate a fan to Action Pact, you can deliver fans to them at 235 Granade Street in Statesboro. Smith recommends calling before you head over to make sure they have staff on site to receive the fans. Action Pact's phone number is 912-489-1604.

You can also contact Action Pact at 912-489-1604 if you or someone you know needs a fan. They will put you on the list and get a fan to you as quickly as more become available.

According to Georgia Power, a fan costs only about $1.50 a month to operate and will help you feel cooler without having to adjust your thermostat.

Smith encourages churches, community organizations, and family members to please be diligent about checking on senior adults in our community to make sure they have the resources they need to stay cool.

Statesboro Urgent Care Drop Off Point

Dr. Sreevalli Dega and Dr. Ian Munger, owners of Statesboro Urgent Care are personally donating fans to the program and encourage the community to join them in doing so. They are accepting donations of fans at Statesboro Urgent Care located at 1176 Brampton Avenue in Statesboro.

"With the soaring temperatures here in South Georgia, it is important to know the warning signs and symptoms of heat-related illness," said Dr. Dega.  "Heat-related illnesses are preventable. Staying indoors, keeping cool and properly hydrated are important ways to prevent heat-related illness. These fans are just one more step in helping protect our community's most vulnerable."

Dr. Dega also encourages everyone to learn the symptoms and what to do if you or a loved one shows signs of having a heat-related illness.
