When Oglethorpe settle Georgia, there were anti-slavery laws. These were lifted in 1750 and slavery began along the shores of both Georgia and South Carolina. These slaves came from West Africa and their isolation on islands led to the formation of an identity recognized as Gullah/Geechee. Do you own a sweet grass basket? These are truly fine art at its best. Did you know that many original Gullah/Geechee were Islam followers?

Bulloch Tidbits are a weekly feature written and narrated by the Bulloch County Historical Society (BCHS) Executive Director Virginia Anne Franklin Waters.  Each week Virginia Anne takes Grice Connect readers onto a historical journey back in time saluting the people and places that have make Statesboro and Bulloch a wonderful place to call home.

Bulloch Tidbits on Grice Connect are made possible thanks to the generous support of McCook's Pharmacy a locally owned pharmacy located at 23630 US-80 in Statesboro.
