Walter Lafayette Cone, 68, known to his family and friends as “Walt”, slipped away from this life on Wednesday, December 13, 2023. Walt was born on June 10, 1955, in Statesboro, GA to the late Marchel and Eloise Cone.

Walt served in the United States Army for three as a vehicle mechanic and a military police officer.  He retired with an honorable discharge on February 18, 1977.  He later joined the National Guard.

Walter was a former employee at the Marriott Hotel in Atlanta, Northside Hospital of Atlanta, Barney A. Smith Lincoln Mercury of Macon, GA, and Riverside Ford of Macon, GA until his health prevented him from strenuous work.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers, Troy, and Ulysees Cone.

His memories will be cherished by his devoted and loving wife of sixteen years, Valarie Cone, Statesboro, GA; two sons, Walter Cone, Jr. (Tunisa) and Nicholas Cone, both of Macon, GA, four step sons, Maurice Washington, Yorktown, PA, Terrence (Kimberly) Ripley of Garden City, GA, Sammy Ripley of Savannah, GA, and Julius Ripley of Statesboro, GA, one step daughter, Julia Ripley of Statesboro, GA, a sister, Patricia (John) Sapp, Statesboro, GA, three brothers, Willie Cone, Fort Lauderdale, FL, Eugene (Rosa) Cone, and Stanley Cone, all of Statesboro, GA. three brothers-in-law, Charles Dunbar of Covington, GA, Toney Washington of McDonough, GA, and Timothy Washington (Senora) of Orlando, FL, sisters-in-law, Beatrice Dunbar, Rhenetri Washington, Rheneta Washington, all of Statesboro, GA, Estella (Carlton) Roberson, Brooklet, GA, 19 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 

A viewing for Mr. Cone will be held, 4 pm to 7 pm, Friday, December 22, 2023, at Hill's Mortuary, Inc.

Mr. Cone will lie in state on the day of service from 12 noon until the funeral hour. There will be no viewing after the eulogy.

The funeral service for Mr. Walter L. Cone, will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, December 23, 2023, at the Johnson Grove Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alexander Smith, Jr., officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors.

Final rites have been entrusted to Hill’s Mortuary, Inc.
