Mr. Robert Esau Tomes, age 80, entered rest, Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at the Chesapeake Hospice Center, Waldorf, MD.
Robert grew up in Madison County with his six siblings. At a very early age, he joined Chestnut Grove Baptist Church in Brightwood, VA. While in high school Robert secured a job as a student bus driver transporting his classmates to George Washington Carver Regional High School.
After graduation, Robert moved to Arlington, VA, and worked briefly with the Arlington County School Board before obtaining a job with WMATA (Metro). He retired after 34 years of service.
Robert married Mae Della Harden on November 27, 1976, in Arlington, VA. The couple moved to Fort Washington in 1978. After they retired, they moved to Statesboro, GA in July 2004 and returned to the Washington, DC area ten years later.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Virginia Tomes, and his siblings, Virginia Walker, Callie Beasley, Irene Murphy, Dorothy Mae Tomes, Edith Tomes, and Corinthian Tomes.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 47 years, Mae Della Harden-Tomes of Waldorf, MD, his daughter, Tachera Lauren Jones and son-in-law, James Jones Jr, his grandson, Corbin Dallas Jones all of Brandywine, MD, one sister, Mildred Nixon of Orange, VA, a godson, Aden Merit, of Statesboro, GA.
Robert is also survived by sixteen in-laws, Lee Nixon of Orange, VA, Johnnie Harden of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Ozell Lawrence of Statesboro GA, Ruby Thomas of Austin, TX, Louise Mosely of Portal, GA, Thelma (Ulysses) Grant of Statesboro, GA, Annie Busby of Portal, GA, Larry (Sandra) Harden of Pompano, FL, Earlene (Gerry) Jackson of Clinton, MD, Linda Harden of Portal, GA, Elder Donnell (Lenora) Harden of Portal, GA, and Yvonne Hagins of Statesboro, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The funeral service for Mr. Robert E. Tomes, will be held 11 am, Saturday, December 9, 2023, at the chapel of Hill’s Mortuary, Inc. with the Rev. S. Maurice Hill, officiating. Burial will follow in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
