Mr. Lewis Michael “Mike” Thompson, 67, of Sylvania, GA passed away on January 25, 2024 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center.
He was born on September 12, 1956 in Sylvania to the late Lewis and Regis Louise Waters Thompson. Mike was a lifelong resident of Screven County and graduated from Screven County High School in 1974. After graduation he attended Georgia Southern University where he studied business management. He was employed at Piggly Wiggly in Sylvania, GA before his career with the United States Postal Service. He began and worked his way through the ranks, first employed with the Sylvania branch, and due to his exceptional performance, he filled many roles around the southeast until finally securing the position of Postmaster of the Statesboro branch.
He was a member of Buck Creek Church, where he regularly attended the Men’s Prayer Breakfast, and was a member of the Wesley Bible Study Class.
Mike was also a member of the Nanny Goat Hunting Club, and loved his Case tractor, named by his granddaughter, “Big Red”.
He is preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, John “Jack” Pollock, and Ross Pollock, and a sister-in-law, Margaret “Peg” Canetto.
He is survived by his wife, Betsy Pollock Thompson of Sylvania; children, Christopher Thompson, of Commerce, GA, Patrick Thompson, of Sylvania; granddaughter, Jayne Thompson, brothers and sisters-in-law, Randall Emerson and Herbia Thompson, of North Augusta, and Brian Clyde and Beth Thompson, of Sylvania; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, William “Bill” and Jackie Pollock, Fredrick “Fred” Canetto, Mary Pollock and Leland William “Billy” Eldamen, all of Sylvania, and Patricia “Pat” and George “Bud” Atwood, of Hillsdale, NY; as well as many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Joiner Anderson Funeral Home Screven Chapel on Saturday, January 27, 2024 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm.
Funeral services will be held at the Joiner Anderson Funeral Home Screven Chapel on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at 2:00pm with Rev. Carroll Gay officiating.
Interment will follow in the Screven County Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Martin Johnson, Tommy Griffin, Terry Canup, Bailey Pollock, Conner Thompson, and Jonathan Pollock.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Wesley Bible Study Class.
