James Edward Key

Mr. James Edward Key, age 100, entered rest Monday, December 18, 2023, at his residence. He was the second oldest of twelve children born, November 23, 1923, in Rocky Ford Georgia, to the late Tank and Maude Riddick Key.

Mr. Key and his family relocated to Statesboro, Georgia where he met Rosa Baker, the love of his life, and the two married on May 23, 1946. From this beloved union of 70 years, they were blessed with five children.

Before moving to Florida in 1955, he attended Magnolia Missionary Baptist Church where he served as an usher. He was a prayer warrior, lifting his family in daily prayer. After spending 37 years in Ft. Lauderdale, he and his wife Rosa returned to Statesboro, and continued their lives on land they purchased and cultivated into a home of rural comfort that they cherished together.

Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Mae, three of his children, Jerry, Arlene, and Charles; a grandson, Akiva Levinsky Key; his son-in-law, Reverend E. Charles Lee, and nine of his siblings.

Edward leaves to cherish legacy of love: his daughters, Elizabeth Lee and Cheryl Habersham; his loving grandchildren, Kelvin “Man” Key (Nikki), Oneiceia Howard, Kristopher Lee, Katrisa “Monique” Lee, Kimberly Lee, Latrice Key, Alicia Key; 17 great grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren; two sisters Beatrice Huff and Mary Lou Scott; dedicated nieces, Lillie Hill and Shirley Huggins, two god-daughters, Yvonne Bass and Christine Wilkerson, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A viewing for Mr. Key will be held, from 4 pm to 7 pm, Friday, December 29, 2023, at Hill’s Mortuary.

The funeral services for Mr. James Edward Key, will be held 12 pm, Saturday, December 30, 2023, at the St. Mary’s Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Timotheus Mincey, pastor/presiding and the Rev. Raphele Smith, officiating. Burial will follow in the Summer Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
