November 17, 1946 - January 4, 2024
Hubert James Johnson, the eldest of three children, was born to the excitement and joy of his parents, the late Walter and Nina Bell Johnson, in Claxton, Georgia, on November 17, 1946.
In 1955, Hubert’s parents moved the family to Statesboro, Georgia in search of a better life. There, Hubert continued his formative education in the Bulloch County School system, and graduated from the William James High School, Class of 1964. Hubert loved school and never missed a day of school from 9th thru 12th grade, earning him the Perfect Attendance Award at graduation. He was a proud Bulldog!
Hubert’s parents believed in God, and set aside Sundays for family church attendance at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, under the Pastorate of the late Reverend J.W.H. Tomas, who was a studied man of God, as well as a school teacher. Hubert embraced church and the study of the Bible, and continued this
practice wherever he was physically located throughout the course of his lifetime.
On June 7, 1966, Hubert enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in Vietnam during the time of conflict, earning him the National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal for service while in Vietnam and the Vietnam Campaign Medal, as well as several other decorations and commendations. Hubert was honorably discharged in 1969, and transferred to the Naval Reserve for an additional 2 years.
After military service Hubert made his home in San Jose, California. Following in his father’s footsteps, Hubert became a Certified Welder, and was employed in the Welding Construction field for over twenty-five years. He returned home to Statesboro in the late 90’s and began to work alongside his dad in the family business, “Johnson Welding Construction.” After a few years he decided to explore a Truck Driving career, as it would allow him to travel. After Truck Driver School he received his Commercial Driver License (CDL) and began commercial truck driving.
Hubert loved the outdoors, and enjoyed fishing as a youngster with his dad and brother. In adulthood and throughout life, fishing was his favorite pastime. He also enjoyed and valued spending time with family. The annual family Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings were his favorites.
