Gay Higdon, age 65, was born Nov. 6, 1957, in Columbus, Georgia, and died June 16, 2023, in Statesboro, Georgia.
Gay lived in Columbus, near where her father was stationed in Ft. Benning, until age three, when the family moved to Ft. Stewart. In 1965, upon her father’s retirement from the military, the family moved to Reidsville. Gay has also lived in Savannah and Atlanta in Georgia, and Perry and Fernandina Beach in Florida. She moved to Statesboro in 2019.
Gay worked as a waitress and bartender for many years until residual pain from a car accident left her unable to stand and walk for long periods. She spent a few years around 2007-08 helping to take care of her grandmother in Perry, Florida. Gay always loved music and art, and she and the other two “three little girls” would sing and “play art” for hours on end. Gay had a phenomenal ability to remember lyrics and jokes, and she also would remember anything funny you ever did or said and do you the favor of telling it on you later for a good laugh.
She was a good conversationalist and made many lasting friendships over the years. Gay loved watching Jeopardy! and going to music festivals at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida. She and her dog, Phonzie, were inseparable.
Gay is preceded in death by her mother, Alda W. Higdon, her father, Ebb Higdon, her brother Mark Higdon, and a daughter, Elizabeth, who died at 8 and a half months in utero in the car crash. She is survived by her sisters, Mary Harmon of Umatilla, Florida; Margaret Tate of Decatur, Georgia; and Jill Doss of Leesburg, Florida; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Gay will take place at a later date.
