Mr. Ed Roy Cleland, age 66, died Saturday August 3, 2024, at his residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The native and lifelong resident of Newington, Georgia was a 1979 graduate of Screven County High School. Upon graduation, Ed joined the U.S. Army, where he served for 25 years until his retirement. During his service in many areas, including Korea and Iraq, Ed received many medals and awards for his outstanding service to his country. Following his retirement, he was employed for ten years with the Screven County Department of Corrections and later seven years with the Department of Defense. In October of 2017 he joined the Screven County Sheriffs Department serving as a Reserve Deputy, until his death.

In 2008, he achieved Master Mason with the Sylvania Lodge #301 F&AM. He was a member of the Screven County Veterans of Foreign War.

Ed was a Christian.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Rufus Cleland and his former wife of 25 years, Frances Newton Cleland.

Surviving are his wife, Teri Lynn Clark Cleland of Newington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Henry and Tammy Newton of Springfield and William and Debra Newton of Oliver; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Ressa and Ralph Carter, Sr. of Midway, Sherry Newton Carter of Georgia and Darla and Holden Ricker of Las Vegas, Nevada; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Alice Brower of Millen and his god children, Clifford Lee Williams of Dearing and Brandi Turner of Guyton.

The family will receive visitors on Friday, August 9, 2024, from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home Screven Chapel.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11:00am in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home Screven Chapel.

Interment will follow with Full Military Honors and Masonic Rites in the Newington City Cemetery.

Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Screven County Sherriff’s Department.
