Carlton (Carl) William Hayes, 84, passed away at Regency Hospital in Florence on Saturday, April 6, 2024, after an illness.
A celebration of his life will be held at Belk Funeral Home Chapel in Darlington on Wednesday, April 10th at 11am, with a visitation following the service.
Carl was born on the Fourth of July 1939 to George Hayes and Bertie Bryant Church Hayes in Lake View, SC, the second youngest of thirteen children. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the military and was stationed at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
During his time out west, he met his wife, Kathy, in Nevada and the two of them started a family in Livermore California.
Carl enjoyed traveling with his family. He made numerous trips across the country with Kathy and their two daughters, visiting many states and sites along the way. In 1979, he moved back to South Carolina with his family and worked as a plant supervisor in Dillon. After retirement he moved to Florence, where he enjoyed gardening, woodworking, visiting family and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Carl was happiest when he was doing things for others, in particular, for his girls Jennifer and Jill.
He leaves behind daughters Jennifer (Barron) Ervin of Florence and Jill (Bryan) Carter of Statesboro, Georgia, grandchildren, Catherine “KK” Ervin, Harlie, Dylan, and Rylie Carter, a brother Lanneau (Margaret) Hayes of Lake View and former wife and friend Kathy.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Carl’s honor to The Florence Manna House at 450 Jarrott Street, Florence, SC 29506.
