Tragic shooting in Statesboro leaves father dead, son in custody

A Statesboro man lost his life in a tragic shooting incident on Monday evening. The victim's own son, now in custody, surrendered to authorities following the deadly altercation in the Oakfield subdivision north of Statesboro.

A tragic shooting incident unfolded in the quiet Oakfield subdivision north of Statesboro on Monday evening, resulting in the death of a 57-year-old man identified as Tony Connely. The suspect, revealed to be the victim's son, Brandon Connely, 24, is now in custody following a surrender to authorities at the Bulloch County Sheriff's office.

Bulloch County 911 dispatchers received a distressing call at 7:26pm on June 10, 2024, reporting a shooting in the 9000 block of Oakfield Drive. Upon arrival at the scene, Bulloch County Sheriff's Deputies confirmed the tragic loss of Tony Connely due to gunshot wounds, while the shooter had already fled the area.

Deputies promptly secured the scene, and Bulloch County EMS provided assistance to the victim's wife, who had sought refuge at a neighbor's home and fortunately escaped physical harm during the incident.

A coordinated effort involving Bulloch County Sheriff's deputies, Georgia State Patrol, and Statesboro Police Officers was launched to locate the shooter.

After several sightings of the suspect's vehicle, Brandon Connely drove to the parking lot of the Bulloch County Sheriff's office around 8:00pm and surrendered himself to authorities.

Sheriff Noel Brown of Bulloch County told Grice Connect that Brandon Connely has a history of multiple arrests related to family violence incidents, with his last arrest in 2021.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
