The Literacy Council uses the Kid's Reading Nook Contest as a fun way to encourage the creation of reading nooks in homes and businesses throughout Bulloch County. A reading nook is any simple, comfortable place that is set aside where children can enjoy easy access to books.

The Literacy Council has partnered with more than 30 local businesses to place reading nooks in their locations. Children can sit and look at and read books in the nooks and take a book home to keep. You may see a list of these community nooks at bullochschools.org/read in the reading nooks section of the website.

The Literacy Council’s mission and initiatives of Bulloch READ are meant to encourage the creation of reading nooks, encourage a literacy-rich environment, increase access to books and reading resources, and increase early brain development in young children.

The Bulloch County Literacy Council is a collaborative group of educators, representatives from literacy organizations, business and civic organization leaders, and community volunteers. Its purpose is to sustain a community collaborative that works to increase Kindergarten readiness for students from birth through Pre-Kindergarten and to support the improvement of literacy levels for all children in Kindergarten through fifth grade.
