I-95 major northbound traffic shift at the I-16/I-95 interchange scheduled

Weather permitting, Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) contractors will shift I-95 northbound traffic Thursday evening, July 24, 2025, opening the new collector-distributor lane, also known as a connecting lane at the I-16/I-95 Interchange. Connecting lanes run parallel to the main travel lanes of an interstate or highway, linking it to access roads or entrance ramps to improve the flow of merging traffic.

Beginning Thursday, July 24, at 9 p.m. through Friday, July 25, at 5 a.m., Georgia DOT’s construction partners will close lanes and ramps to facilitate the traffic shift to move I-95 northbound traffic to its final configuration. During this time, the connecting lane will be placed into service. The traveling public should expect delays with intermittent lane and ramp closures along this stretch of highway.

Drivers on I-95 north must make their exiting decisions sooner with this planned opening. The new connecting lane system is barrier separated from interstate through traffic which decreases weaving maneuvers allowing more distance to safely enter and exit at the I-16/I-95 Interchange.

This is a major milestone as the16@95 Improvement Projects moves toward substantial completion with all lanes and bridges in final alignment this year. The Major Mobility Investment Program project openings continue improving traffic flow and safety along I-16 and I-95, one of Georgia’s busiest freight corridors as well as the gateway to Georgia’s growing port in Savannah.
