GBI provides update on death investigation in Brooklet

The GBI has provided an update in the death investigation that took place overnight in Brooklet, following the report of an unresponsive child in a vehicle.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has made an update in the death investigation that took place in Brooklet overnight on May 27. See the update below.

At the request of the Brooklet Police Department, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting a death investigation involving two individuals in Brooklet, Bulloch County.

Preliminary information indicates that on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at about 7:45 p.m., law enforcement officers with the Brooklet Police Department and the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call reporting an unresponsive child locked in a vehicle at Brooklet City Park.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers made entry into the vehicle and found a child dead in the backseat with an apparent gunshot wound. A man was found dead in the front seat from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was found on his lap.

The adult has been identified as James Lee Mayo, age 37. The child has been identified as his 9-year-old daughter.

The bodies will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Pooler for autopsies.

This investigation is active and ongoing.
