GALLERY | Hands-on Learning: Second annual Touch a Truck was a crowd favorite

Back by popular demand, Public Works' Touch a Truck event had something for everyone. Families got up close and personal with the real heroes of our community: the first responders.

The second annual Touch a Truck event, hosted by Bulloch County Public Works, took place from 3:00pm to 7:00pm at the Bulloch County Agricultural Complex on Monday, May 20, 2024.

Alexis Knox, administrative coordinator for Bulloch County Public Works, is the founder and organizer for the interactive event, which enthralled families for the second year in a row. Dal Cannady, former bureau chief for WTOC and current communications director for the Bulloch County Board of Commissioners, assisted Knox in the herculean feat to assemble numerous first responders in a central location.

Knox explains that the catalyst for the event was the first responder status that Bulloch County Public Works earned last year. The Board of Commissioners issued the proclamation, and the celebration of first responder status organically came to mind.

"Last year was the first year we celebrated Public Works Week, and we just decided this is our first year as first responders, how can we get ourselves out there to the community and how can we show that we're working right next to police and EMS and fire? These guys, as soon as a storm comes through, they're running 24 hour shifts as well. We just wanted to find a way to show this is how we work together," Knox explained.

The event had numerous vehicles including police cruisers, ambulances, a fire truck, and a SWAT rescue vehicle, as well as several construction vehicles.

"There's so much to see and do," Knox said of the event.

An AirMedCare helicopter circled the Ag Complex and landed to the delight of awe-struck onlookers. The event was one to remember.
