The Fred and Dinah Gretsch School of Music (Statesboro Campus) will present several upcoming performances in Statesboro and Savannah, featuring String students and the Georgia Southern Symphony String Camerata.
On Saturday, April 13, 7:30 PM, Max Martinez and Dr. Karla Rocker will perform a Junior Violin Recital in the Carol A. Carter Recital Hall (Statesboro Campus). The program includes Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Violin Sonata No. 6 in G Major, K. 301, Johann Sebastian Bach Sonata No. 3 for Violin Solo and Aram Khachaturian Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (Piano).
As a Junior Performance Major from El Salvador, Mr. Martinez is a violin student of Dr. Larisa Elisha, Second Violin of the Magnolia String Quartet and Associate Concertmaster of the Georgia Southern Symphony. Admission is free.
On Sunday, April 14, 2:30 PM, Julia Sellman and Dr. Michael Braz will perform an Invitational Violin Recital in the Carol A. Carter Recital Hall (Statesboro Campus). The program includes Tamaso Antonio Vitali Chaconne, Johann Sebastian Bach Sonata No. 3 for Violin Solo, Gabriel Fauré Sonata for Violin and Piano in A Major, Op. 13 and Samuel Barber Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 14. Ms. Sellman is a violin student of Dr. Larisa Elisha, First Violin of the Magnolia String Quartet and Concertmaster of the Georgia Southern Symphony. Admission is free.
On Saturday, April 27, 7:00 PM, the Georgia Southern Symphony String Camerata, under the direction of Dr. Steven Elisha, will perform a concert at St. John's Church in Savannah (325 Bull Street). The musical program includes Julius (Gyula) von Beliczay Serenade in D Minor, Op. 36, Johann Sebastian Bach Concerto for Violin and Cello (Oboe) in C minor, BWV 1060R, featuring Dr. Larisa Elisha, violin, Dr. Steven Elisha, cello and Dr. Terre Johnson, harpsichord, Maurice Ravel Florence Pavane pour une infante défunte, Florence Beatrice Price Quartet No. 2 in G Major and Béla Bartók Romanian Folk Dances, Sz.56. The program will be repeated in Statesboro, on Saturday, May 11, 2:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church (1215 Fair Road). Both concerts are part of a fundraising campaign to support the Georgia Southern Symphony String Camerata and their upcoming performing tour of Germany, May 19-June 1, 2024. All proceeds from the performances will be matched, dollar for dollar, by the Halle Foundation.
The Camerata will perform in Berlin, Leipzig, Halle and Bamberg, including the Summerhall of the Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church) in Leipzig, where composer Johann Sebastian Bach was last employed and buried. The tour will also include faculty/student collaborations with Georgia Southern’s official exchange partner, Halle an der Saale, as well as visiting other significant musical, historic and cultural landmarks throughout Germany.
The Georgia Southern Symphony and String Camerata, a premier ensemble of the Gretsch School of Music, has been a recipient of an Emmy Award and featured in performances throughout the State and Region, including the Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service Conferences, the Georgia Governor’s Mansion, as well as at the Performing Arts Center and Carol A. Carter Recital Hall on the Statesboro Campus, Fine Arts Auditorium (Savannah), the Dublin (Georgia) Arts Council Gala and Vidalia’s historic Pal Theater.
