Death investigation underway at Brooklet Recreation Park

Brooklet Police, Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office, and the GBI are investigating the deaths of two people at Brooklet Recreation Park Tuesday evening. Authorities have stated there is no threat to the public.

At the request of the Brooklet Police Department, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting a death investigation involving two individuals in Brooklet, Bulloch County.

Preliminary information indicates that on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at about 7:45 p.m., law enforcement officers with the Brooklet Police Department and the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call reporting an unresponsive child locked in a vehicle at Brooklet City Park.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers made entry into the vehicle and found a child dead in the backseat with an apparent gunshot wound. A man was found dead in the front seat from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was found on his lap.

The adult has been identified as James Lee Mayo, age 37. The child has been identified as his 9-year-old daughter.

The bodies will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Pooler for autopsies.

This investigation is active and ongoing.

A death investigation is underway at Brooklet Recreation Park following the discovery of two deceased individuals in a vehicle on Tuesday evening, May 27, 2025. 

Emergency responders, including Bulloch County EMS, Bulloch County Fire, Brooklet Police Department, Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), were dispatched to the scene.

Bulloch County Coroner Chuck Francis was also called to the scene to assist with the investigation in collaboration with law enforcement agencies.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the individuals. Law enforcement officials stated at the scene that there is no indication of a threat to the public.
