Chatham Parkway closure at I-16 anticipated to start June 20

Starting June 20th, the Chatham Parkway bridge over I-16 will undergo a significant construction project, leading to a 20-day closure and impacting traffic flow. Not all navigation applications may reflect the detour at the time of the closure, and motorists are advised to follow detour signage and posted speed limits.

Weather permitting, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) will implement a 20 day closure of Chatham Parkway bridge at Interstate 16 starting at 9 p.m. Friday, June 20. During this period, contractors will raise the existing Chatham Parkway bridge over I-16 to support reconstructed interstate lanes below.

During the 20 day complete Chatham Parkway bridge closure period, all ramps on and off I-16 will remain open, except as noted below.

During the closure, traffic will be impacted as follows:

  • I-16 eastbound (EB) off-ramp traffic will only be able to turn south onto Chatham Parkway                  
  • Northbound (NB) Chatham Parkway traffic approaching I-16 will only be able to turn right onto I-16 EB
  • I-16 westbound (WB) off-ramp traffic will only be able to turn north onto Chatham Parkway
  • Southbound (SB) Chatham Parkway traffic approaching I-16 will only be able to turn right onto I-16 WB

During the 4 night I-16 closure, traffic will be detoured as follows:

From 9 p.m., Friday, June 20 through 9 a.m., Saturday, June 21

 From 10 p.m., Saturday, June 21 through 5 a.m., Sunday, June 22

From 10 p.m., Sunday, June 22 through 5 a.m., Monday, June 23:

From 9 p.m., Monday, June 23 through 3 a.m., Tuesday, June 24

Following the closure, the Chatham Parkway bridge over I-16 will have four travel lanes, with two in each direction. There will be lane closures, primarily during the nighttime, for the duration of the ongoing work, which is expected to last several weeks.

Advisory: Exact time may change due to weather conditions. There may be intermittent traffic pacing and lane and ramp closures that occur within the work zone in addition to this notice. Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, stay alert, and watch for workers.
