LEARNER SUPPORT ASSISTANT

General Purpose of Position:

The nêhiyaw waskawiniwêw wîcihiwêw Learner Support Assistant will work under the supervision of a certified Teacher and nêhiyaw waskawiniwêw Behaviour Specialist. The nêhiyaw waskawiniwêw wîcihiwêw Learner Support Assistant is responsible for assisting with implementing specialized and modified learning activities. He/she is primarily responsible for assisting with instruction and providing support and encouragement to learners who require additional attention to ensure success and a meaningful learning experience.

 

Qualifications:

  1. EA/TA Certificate or ECD Diploma
  2. A minimum of two years of experience in a similar position.
  3. Knowledge of the Cree language and culture - An asset

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assist and provide support and encouragement to learners one-on-one daily.
  2. Assist teacher(s) and nêhiyaw waskawiniwêw Behaviour Specialist in the planning, devising special strategies and implementation of modified programming for learners enrolled in programs for the following:
    1. moderate learning disabilities
    2. moderate or severe autism
    3. moderate and severe cognitive disabilities
    4. moderate and severe behavioural challenges
    5. physical or medical conditions
    6. communication disabilities
  3. Assist learners in developing their social, emotional, academic and physical skills.
  4. Help build learners’ social skills, emotional skills and self-esteem.
  5. Offer encouragement to help learner fit into the classroom and the school community.
  6. Assist with learner’s personal/hygiene care.
  7. Assist in exercising and implementing adaptive physical education, range of motion programs, fine and gross motor skills development and life skills management.
  8. Liaises with specialized services members (e.g. Speech Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist) and provides programming requirements under the direction of the teacher and the nehiyaw waskawiniwêw Behaviour Specialist.
  9. Consult with teacher(s) and nêhiyaw waskawiniwêw Behaviour Specialist to provide feedback, verbal and anecdotal, on learners’ performance and progress.
  10. Provide assistance to designated learners to ensure the highest possible degree of inclusion within the educational and social programs of the school.
  11. Record and assist in evaluating learners understanding of directions, concepts and progress.
  12. Identify and develop strategies to assist learner needs and additional needs of learners.
  13. Provide supervision of learners in buildings or other school areas and school-related activities (i.e., field trips, hall duty, emergency drills/lockdowns, at assemblies, in lunch and playground areas, or with school buses as required).
  14. Participate in staff meetings and committees.
  15. Undertake professional development opportunities such as additional training in Special Education field, etc.
  16. Maintain a high level of ethical behaviour and confidentiality of information about learners and staff.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned and deemed necessary by the nêhiyaw waskawiniwêw Behaviour Specialist, Principal, Vice Principal and/or School Admin. Assistant.
  18. Will bank hours for Fall and Spring Break.
