5 Things You Should Do Every Fall to Prepare Your Furnace for Winter

There’s nothing worse than discovering your furnace isn’t working… on the coldest day of the year. Luckily, a little maintenance now can save you from discomfort (and costly repairs) later.

Here are a few essential steps to get your furnace winter-ready before the temperatures take a dive:

1. Replace or Clean the Filter
A dirty filter restricts airflow and forces your system to work harder than it needs to.
Swap it out every 1–3 months—especially if you have pets or allergies. A high-MERV filter will improve both performance and air quality.

2. Test Your Thermostat
Before it’s -20°C, double-check that your thermostat is doing its job.
Set it to “Heat,” bump the temp a few degrees, and listen for the furnace to kick in. Smart thermostat? Make sure it’s updated and connected.

3. Clear the Vents and Registers
Blocked vents mean uneven heating and wasted energy.
Do a quick sweep around your home to make sure nothing’s covering them. Vacuum out any dust or debris while you’re at it.

4. Inspect Exhaust and Intake Pipes
High-efficiency furnaces typically vent outside via PVC pipes.
Leaves, nests, or snow can block airflow and even create safety risks. Take a walk around the exterior and check for obstructions.

5. Book a Professional Tune-Up
A qualified tech will check your furnace inside and out—cleaning parts, testing gas pressure, inspecting the heat exchanger, and more.
Even if everything seems fine, this visit can help prevent future breakdowns and keep your warranty intact.
