The sun was shining, tails were wagging, and paws were padding around the Downtown Dog Park as Statesboro locals gathered for a paw-some event on Saturday, April 13th. Organized by the dynamic team at Great GA Realty, in collaboration with Fixing the Boro, Pups in the Park saw a vibrant turnout of pet lovers, all eager to partake in the festivities tailored specifically for their four-legged companions.
Great GA Realty Marketing and Office Manager Sydney Davis shared the inspiration behind the event, citing owner Jessica Hermann's recent addition to the Great GA Realty family— a new playful puppy of her own—as the catalyst. Hermann's newfound love for her furry friend opened her up to the distinct dog culture of Statesboro.
Hermann, the owner and broker of Great GA Realty, is passionate about offering events for the community and helping people engage with their neighbors; she has especially loved seeing people out and about and watching the downtown scene grow.
"People shouldn’t have to pay to engage with the community, and getting out and being together, that’s what it’s supposed to be about," Hermann emphasized. "We do lots of events for the people, of course, but have never done anything for the dogs. This has been special and fun. We love our community and love to give back. We’re happy people have resonated with this event and that all of the puppies are enjoying some extra playtime and treats."
Shelby Phillips, Rescue Coordinator at Fixing the Boro, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the organization's commitment to providing low-cost spay and neuter options for the community. Phillips, who has been with Fixing the Boro for over six years, and her team brought along three adoptable dogs, spreading awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering while also providing an opportunity for dogs to find their new homes.
"We were invited to come. Of course, we couldn’t say no," Phillips shared. "Engagement has been good today. We’re here with our swag and three adoptable dogs, getting them some exposure, training, and love. It’s always great to get out here and let people know who they are."
Among the attendees, Jami Sanders shared her personal journey with Fixing the Boro, revealing how her adopted dog, Millie, came into her life.
"We’ve only had Millie here about 3-4 months. Fixing in the Boro was my birthday present," Sanders shared. "We moved to Statesboro almost a year go now in May. I’m finishing up school now online; I’m currently a Senior at Kennesaw pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. Once I’m done, I’ll probably go back– I’m considering a master's degree at Southern. Right now, Millie and I are just enjoying learning each other and our new life together here in Statesboro."
With an array of activities and attractions tailored specifically for the canine attendees, including a play pool, homemade treats, and more, the event proved to be appreciated by both pets and their owners. The event served as not only a fun-filled day for local dogs but also as a platform to raise awareness about responsible pet ownership and the vital work of organizations like Fixing the Boro in ensuring the well-being of our pets.
As the day at the park drew to a close, and tired but contented pups were taken back to their homes, it was evident that the Pups in the Park event was a success among Statesboro's dog-loving community.
