Martha Sue Wood

July 7, 1930  -  July 5, 2024

Mrs. Sue Wynn Wood, age 93, died on Friday July 5, 2024 after a long illness. She was under the care of Spanish Oaks Hospice in Savannah.

She was born in Bulloch County and lived Savannah much of her life until 1966 when she moved to Brooklet. She retired as a first-grade teacher at Mattie Lively Elementary School. A job she dearly loved and talked about until her passing. She was recognized by the Georgia Association of Educators in 1988 as a semi-finalist for the State of Georgia Teacher Hall of Fame Award.

She was always giving to others. Always the caregiver for anyone in her family that passed before her. When she needed care, she never once complained and was most thankful to the staff of Spanish Oaks that took care of her for the past six years. She may have been best known for her pound cake and could always be counted on to bring the cake for any occasion.

Mrs. Wood was a member of the First Baptist Church of Statesboro since 1966. She loved the members of the Alathean Camilla Boyd Sunday School Class. A group of her closest friends that could always be counted on to be there for each other.

She is preceded in death by her husband Harold G. Wood, her loving husband that was by her side for 57 years; her son Kenneth, two brothers Vernon and Harold Wynn.

She is survived by her son Grey (Mary Joy) Wood of Savannah; four grandchildren, Lauren and Kevin Wood of Savannah and Harold (HI) and Cale (Courtney) Wood of Brooklet; one great grandson Waylon, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside funeral service and burial will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Eastside Cemetery with Dr. John Waters officiating.
