Emory Joseph Alloways, 89, of Sylvania passed on September 18, 2023, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice surrounded by his family.
He was born to Emory Roosevelt and Elizabeth Bragg in Baltimore, Maryland on November 15, 1933. He had been employed as the foreman of the cutting department for White Stag, Kaiser-Roth, Rincon Sportswear, and lastly, for over a decade as paraprofessional in physical education for Screven County Elementary School. He was an elder of First Christian Church of Sylvania and served in many capacities that included; Sunday school teacher, worship leader, a role he would hand down to his children, and they, their children, the establishment of a Sunday school and church service at Syl-View nursing home, and for making his hot chocolate, that kept many warm during the cold nights of the annual nativity. He also was a former member of the Jaycees and served faithfully to spread the word of God as a Gideon. He will be remembered for planting the annual garden and reaping the fruit of the harvest with his grands but most of all, for his love of his wife.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Gene R. Alloways, Mildred Jenkins, and David Lee Alloways.
Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Avret Alloways; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tina and John Withrow and Michelle and Wilton Stubbs, all of Sylvania, a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Donna Alloways of North Augusta, SC, grandchildren, Wes and Leigh Ann Withrow, Jamie W. and Mark Smith, all of Sylvania and Chandler and Cassidy Alloways of North Augusta, great-grandson, Griffin Smith; great-granddaughters, Carlee Smith, Anna Kate Withrow, Ava Withrow, and Ella Withrow; and sisters-in-law, Kathy Avret of Mansfield and Charlotte A. Lambert of Sylvania.
Services will be held on Friday, September 22, 2023 at 11:00am in the Screven Chapel of Joiner Anderson Funeral Home with Wes Withrow officiating. The family will receive friends for an hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow in the Screven County Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be family.
