Dr. James Lewis "Doc" MacLeod

April 27, 1937  -  August 19, 2024

Dr. James Lewis “Doc” MacLeod, formerly of Sylvania, died at his residence in Augusta, Georgia on August 19, 2024. He was 87.

Dr. MacLeod was born in Louisiana, the son of Presbyterian minister William Lassiter McLeod, Sr. and Sara Macaulay McLeod.

He is predeceased by his parents and one brother, the Honorable William Lassiter “Bill” McLeod, Jr. and sister-in-law, Lady Marilyn “Cissie” McLeod. He is survived by nieces Sara Nelson McLeod Judson (Mark) of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Martha Ellen McLeod Livanec of Galveston, Texas, and Ruth McLeod Rohs (Stephen) of Denver, Colorado. He is also survived by grand nieces and nephews Rachel McLeod Judson, Marie Louise Livanec, William McLeod Livanec, Caroline Isabel Livanec, William McLeod Rohs, and Katherine Elizabeth Rohs.

Dr. MacLeod was an ordained minister, and he pastored at Sylvania Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church and most recently at Lyndon Grove Presbyterian Church in Augusta, Georgia. He taught at Screven County High School and later at Glynn Academy and Brunswick High School where he headed the gifted students program. He was named Star Teacher, and he coached the debate teams in both counties. He also served as a city councilman and later as mayor pro-tem for the city of Brunswick.

He was formerly the owner of Brunswick Gallery Antiques and co-owner and president of Brunswick Finance Company. He also purchased, restored, and resold multiple Victorian houses.

Dr. MacLeod was a prolific writer, and he penned several books, mostly of a religious, political, and philosophical nature. His writings included The Presbyterian Tradition in the South, A Season of Grace, Going Beyond Literalism, The Great Dr. Waddle, and Let the People Rule.

He held degrees from Washington and Lee University, Emory University, Princeton Seminary, and Mississippi State University. He also studied in France and India, and he was a Fullbright Scholar. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati and a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.

Dr. MacLeod provided leadership and support for many up and coming young men as they worked to obtain higher education. He was a scholar, a devout Christian, and a true southern gentleman.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, August 25, 2024 with visitation at 2:00 p.m. and the service at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Sylvania, Georgia. Internment will be at a later date in Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, please send remembrances to the church or charity of the givers choice.
