Betty Ashurst

April 5, 1947  -  July 5, 2025

Betty Jewel Ashurst, 78, of Statesboro, Georgia went home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 5, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on April 5, 1947 in Cairo, Georgia, Betty was the beloved youngest daughter of the late JT French and Annie Mae French. To those who knew and loved her, she was affectionately known as Mama, Nana, Babe, or Mrs. Betty.

Betty graduated from Cairo High School in 1965. Thereafter she spent the remainder of her life as a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Betty spent her professional career, before retirement, as a consummate retail professional serving her customers at both Jolly Jeweler and later, Mason’s Home Furnishings.

Betty was an avid gardener with an affinity for growing beautiful day lilies. She spent countless hours in her earlier life tending a yard full of flowers that she loved so much. She was also a master seamstress, crochet and cross-stitch artist. She leaves behind many master-pieces to be passed down for generations to come. In her most recent years, Betty loved to bird watch from her favorite rocking chair on her back porch which she called “her back yard paradise.” Her favorites to watch were hummingbirds and bluebirds.

Above all else, Betty’s greatest treasure was her family. She is survived by her beloved husband of 37 years, Dana Lamar Ashurst and her children Monicca Bohannon (Michael) and Sabrina Nease (Joe). She also leaves behind her special lap companion, Macy.

She was the proud grandmother of four grandchildren: Emily and Travis Bohannon, Mason and Braxton (Carly) Johns. She was the great-grandmother of McKenna Johns.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of East Georgia Regional Medical Center and Gentiva Hospice.

Betty Ashurst’s legacy lives on in every life she touched. She was truly one of a kind and deeply, profoundly loved. In honor of her spunky spirit and in recognition of her favorite color, the family asks that you please wear your favorite shade of pink to her home going service.

Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025 at 11 AM, Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Fitzgerald Georgia. A private burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to your hospice of choice.
