On Saturday, December 10th, nearly 100 Feed the Boro (FTB) volunteers came together to help spread Christmas cheer with three truckloads of free food. Hundreds of citizens spent the night in their cars, waiting for monthly food drop at Statesboro High School.

Volunteers gather to receive instructions

The volunteers began before sunrise unloading the trucks and braved 50 degree, misting rain to distribute enough food to provide 1,000 families food for a week. This is very helpful to families, especially with Bulloch County Schools taking a break for several weeks for the holidays.

Cars work their way through the distribution lines

Over 7,500 children in Bulloch County schools qualify for free meals. For many of these children this are the only meals they receive during the day.

Saturday's food drop was made possible because of a wonderful partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank in Savannah, presenting sponsor Food Lion and The Rotary Club of Statesboro.

The Rotary Club of Statesboro provided financial support and volunteer help with the Christmas food drop.

Feed the Boro thanks the Rotary Club, the Damascus Mens group and all of the volunteers who made a wonderful difference for hundreds of families. They also extend a special thanks to the Statesboro Police Department for provided assistance with traffic.

How you can help

Bulloch County has a 29% poverty rate, which means that close to 1 out of 3 people may go to bed hungry tonight. Even with help from other local sources, this is still a shocking figure. Feed the Boro has been asked to continue our food drops that supply a family of four, two meals a day for a week and to do so, they need the help of our community. We invite you to volunteer and join in the efforts to feed the less fortunate.

If volunteer spots are filled, there is another way you can help.  FTB encourages you to sponsor a meal for an individual or a family.  For a contribution of $15 you can sponsor a family of three. $25 – family of five, $100 – 20 people, etc.

Thanks to their generous sponsors, it only costs around $5 per person to provide groceries for a week.

Feed the Boro continues to raise funds to help with this and other FTB projects. Two easy ways to give is through a check made payable to:
