Bulloch, Bryan, and Effingham counties to benefit from free disaster training

The Bulloch County Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) and Bulloch Strong are partnering with Georgia VOAD to host crucial long-term recovery training sessions in Statesboro. These free workshops are designed to equip individuals, churches, civic groups, and business organizations with the tools and knowledge needed to effectively assist with disaster recovery efforts in the community.  Citizens from Bulloch, Bryan and Effingham are invited to attend these training sessions.

Dr. Frank Davis, M.D., Chair of Bulloch County VOAD, is enthusiastically inviting anyone interested in contributing to disaster recovery to attend, regardless of prior experience with VOAD or disaster relief. The training aims to build local capacity to support residents in the long-term aftermath of various disasters.

The Long-Term Recovery Training workshop will be held at Southbridge Community Church, located at 12376 US-301 in Statesboro. This training will provide valuable insights into forming Long-Term Recovery Groups (LTRGs) and Unmet Needs Committees, which play vital roles in coordinating aid and resources for disaster survivors.

“With the anticipation of an above-average hurricane season, it is more important than ever to prepare our community for the long road to recovery following a disaster,” said Dr. Davis. “This partnership with Georgia VOAD and the support of GEMA and FEMA will provide invaluable training to help us build a resilient and prepared Bulloch County.”

The free, two-day workshop will take place on Monday and Tuesday, June 23-24, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day at Southbridge Community Church. Lunch will be provided. The training agenda includes several key Recovery Tools Workshops (RTWs), such as:

  • LTRG Communications Best Practices: Learn how to share accurate and timely information during all phases of disaster recovery.
  • Disaster Case Management: Understand how Disaster Case Managers work with survivors to create and achieve realistic recovery plans.
  • Financial Management & Grant Writing: Familiarize yourself with the responsibilities of securing and managing financial resources for long-term recovery efforts.
  • Construction Management: Cover the essential aspects of overseeing the repair or rebuilding of homes to safe and functional conditions.
  • Emotional and Spiritual Care: Discover the critical elements of providing emotional and spiritual support to survivors and the organizations assisting them.
  • Volunteer Coordination: Learn how to effectively manage and engage volunteers, a vital resource in disaster recovery.
  • Donations Management: Understand how to maximize and manage donated goods to support long-term recovery needs.

Georgia VOAD is sponsoring the training, covering all costs to ensure accessibility for all interested parties. Dr. Davis encourages broad participation from the community.

“Whether you represent a church, a non-profit, a business, or are simply an individual wanting to help, this training will provide you with the skills and knowledge to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by disaster,” Dr. Davis emphasized.
