STATESBORO, Ga. - March 18, 2024 - During halftime at the season opener, South Georgia Tormenta FC presented a check for more than $2,000 to the Statesboro Food Bank. The donation came from a fundraiser held for the 2023 season, where Tormenta donated $100 for every home goal scored by its USL League One team and USL W League team.
“Hunger is one of the few problems that we can help solve on the local level and find it astronomically important to do so,” Tormenta FC President and Co-Owner Darin Van Tassell said. “Sport can bring attention to so many worthy causes, but this is one that is especially meaningful to us because it impacts people directly in our community.”
Tormenta FC hopes to increase the dollar amount donated this season to deepen the impact the club has on hunger in the community. South Georgia calls on community businesses to pledge a sum for this fundraiser.
“We are so excited that Darin and Netra Van Tassell and the Tormenta Team are going to continue their support of our mission in 2024,” Food Bank Executive Director Sheila Stewart-Leach said. “During the last season, the dollars donated by Tormenta helped provide meals for 766,000 individuals, of which almost 50% were the community’s children.”
On match days at home, fans should look out for a special shoutout to appear on the video board after each home goal, celebrating the donation for the Statesboro Food Bank. Tormenta FC is proud to continuously recognize and elevate the presence of resources fighting hunger for the community.
