Despite late rally, Eagles fall just short to Dukes, 7-6

The Georgia Southern baseball team (25-23, 11-13 SBC) fell in the series finale to the Dukes of James Madison (15-33, 8-16) by a score of 7-6 on Sunday afternoon in Statesboro (May 4th).

For now all three games of the series, the Dukes would be the ones to hit the scoreboard first as back-to-back singles would eventually plate one for them in the top of the second. The Eagles would, however, have a quick response of their own. In the bottom of the same inning, Cade Parker would single with two runners on to match the Dukes on the scoreboard. The Eagles would go on to score four more runs, highlighted by a JP Herrholz two-RBI single to extend the lead all the way to 5-1 for Southern.

The score would stay silent until the fifth inning, when Carter DeGondea gave all he could on the mound. The junior would go 4.1 innings, allowing three runs and striking out four in his first start as an Eagle. An RBI-single scored one for JMU, which was eventually followed by a three-run homer to even up the contest a five all. They would then take the lead their next chances at the plate with back-to-back two out singles to make it 7-5.

The Eagles would get a run back in their seventh when Sean White singled through the middle to cut the deficit to one. In the ninth, back-to-back two out singles from both Jonathan Jaime and JD Kaiser would set up the Eagles well late. However, Cade Parker's ball the very next batter was just a few feet away from exiting the yard. However, the caught ball on the warning track would end the ball game.

Four different Eagles would have two hits on the day in Daniel Haab, Jaime, Kaiser, and Parker to help tremendously add on the their squad's 12 hits on the afternoon.

The Eagles have their penultimate midweek game this upcoming Tuesday (May 6th), when they head up to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech. First pitch in ATL is set for 6 PM.
