Buddy Smothers

August 27, 1940 - August 4, 2023 Mr. Buddy Smothers, age 82, died on Friday, August 4th 2023 at his home in Statesboro, under the care of Bethany Hospice.

Buddy was born in Bangor, AL to the late Samuel Edward Smothers and Gracie Williams Smothers. He was raised in Cullman, AL and was the youngest of 7 siblings.

Buddy worked as a truck driver his whole life. He was owner and operator of his own trucking company and also worked for Transportation Specialties as a dispatcher. In his retirement, he rode with his best friend, Sandra Mims. He enjoyed camping, listening to bluegrass and going to bluegrass festivals, mowing the yard, killing ant beds, friend shrimp, redneck golf, and most of all time with his friends and family.

Buddy was a member at Trinity Baptist Church in Nevils and also a member of the J.O.Y. Sunday School Class. Buddy is preceded in death by a son, Tony Smothers.

The family would like to express their gratitude for all the calls and visits during this time. They also give special thanks to Beth Powell who helped care for Buddy in his final days.

Buddy is survived by the love of his life, Sandy Mims of Statesboro, his children, Scott and Tammy Smothers, David and Tabatha Smothers, Norman Smothers, all of Cullman, AL, Greg and Heather Mims, and Ross and Missy Mims, both of Statesboro, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his brother, Hulon Smothers of Merritt Island, FL, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors on Monday from 3:00pm until 5:00pm as they celebrate his life at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro. It is the family’s request that everyone dress casual and bring your “red bandana” in memory of Buddy.
