United Way SEGA offers free board training workshop to grow local nonprofit leadership

United Way Southeast Georgia

United Way of Southeast Georgia is continuing its commitment to strengthening the region’s nonprofit sector by offering a new workshop designed to empower community members interested in nonprofit board service.

“Board Training 101: An Introduction to Service" is a free session open to the public, scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at AgSouth Farm Credit, located at 20 East Vine Street in Statesboro. Light refreshments will be served.

The workshop is a natural extension of United Way SEGA’s Nonprofit Leadership Development Workshop Series, launched last year in partnership with Georgia Southern University’s Department of Public and Nonprofit Studies and supported by Bulloch Solutions. That initiative brought together executive directors and board members from across the region to build leadership capacity, foster collaboration, and support the missions of local organizations.

Now, the focus shifts to recruiting and equipping the next generation of board members.

Led by Dr. Kristina Patterson, Assistant Professor at Georgia Southern, the upcoming session will offer a beginner-friendly overview of nonprofit board service. Attendees will learn about:

  • The legal responsibilities and best practices of board members

  • Key personal questions to ask before joining a board

  • How to evaluate if a board is a good fit

  • Open opportunities to serve on local boards

  • Live Q&A for personalized guidance

Dr. Patterson brings extensive academic and real-world expertise, with over 15 years of board service and a Ph.D. in Public Policy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She currently serves on the boards of Habitat for Humanity of Bulloch County and Share Health Southeast Georgia.
