Bulloch County public safety agencies responded to a train versus car crash just outside the city limits of Statesboro on Tuesday morning.
At 8:43 am on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 Bulloch 911 dispatched Bulloch County EMS, Statesboro Police, Bulloch County Sheriff's deputies, Statesboro Fire Department and Georgia State Patrol to the intersection of Mathews Road and Fletcher Drive for a car crash with a train.
According to GSP Sergeant Robbie Scott two CEFX train engines were traveling south on the train tracks when a car failed to yield. The car was traveling east on Fletcher Drive toward Mathews Road and was struck by the train as it crossed the train tracks.
The train struck the car in the drivers side entrapping the driver. Statesboro Fire Department firefighters extricated the driver and Bulloch County EMS Paramedics transported the driver to Air Evac 95's station at the Kiwanis Fairgrounds. Air Evac 95's flight crew then flew the driver to the regions level one trauma center, Memorial Medical Center in Savannah.
The conditions of the driver is unknown. The driver was alone in the vehicle. There were no other injuries reported.
GSP is handling the investigation.
Sergeant Scott reminds motorist to always use extreme caution when approaching railroad tracks. Trains always have the right of way and it very difficult for a train to stop suddenly at an intersection.
