On April 10, Ogeechee Technical hosted 65 students and 15 adults from the Atlanta-based More Than Conquerors, Inc. (MTCI) organization to help introduce teen learners to the advantages of pursuing a technical education.
The group spent about two hours with OTC faculty, staff, and administration hearing an overview of OTC, discussing the application process, learning about scholarship opportunities available to OTC students as well as the programs that are covered by the Pell and Hope Career Grant, immediately followed by a tour of campus.
The students who were split into six groups had the opportunity to visit several of OTC’s program areas including HVAC, Automotive, Veterinary Technology, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Esthetician, Sonography, Echocardiography, Radiologic Technology, Funeral Services, Medical Assisting, Paramedicine, Dental Assisting, and the state-of-the-art Nursing lab.
“We received overwhelmingly positive feedback from our students – they absolutely loved everything they saw,” said Rashida Hawthorne, a member of the MTCI team. “The experience truly opened their eyes to the exceptional opportunities that technical colleges offer, many of which they were previously unaware of.”
The MTCI group works to achieve positive youth outcomes by building self-sufficiency, increasing civic engagement, teaching about healthy relationships, and engaging in family, school, and community as partners with youth.
“It was a pleasure to host the students and staff of MTCI and to be able to show the students what kind of future could await them should they chose to pursue technical education,” said Michelle Fields, Assistant Director for Admissions. “Schools in the Technical College System of Georgia are easy to access, affordable, and offer programs that lead to lifelong, profitable careers that can be a game changer for many families.”
