Over the weekend, students who applied to get the animal of their choosing gathered at the Kiwanis-Ogeechee Fairgrounds and raffled off each animal, in spite of the rain. Livestock awards included pigs, goats, lambs, and a cow.

The Kiwanis Livestock Project is designed to provide livestock animals to FFA, 4-H, and pre-club members in the Ogeechee Fair Area (Bulloch, Bryan, Candler, Evans, Jenkins, Screven, and Tattnall Counties) based upon their expressed interest and need. The intent of this project is to provide exposure and to encourage learning about livestock and its role in agriculture and youth development.

Students who received the livestock have to show their animals at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair this October and at another showing event of their choosing. They also have to complete their project handbooks. Failure to show the livestock could result in an invoice for the animal or repossession.

Applications started back in January, and the club started looking at how much money needed to be raised based on the number of applicants. A total of 25 animals were awarded this year.

Don't forget to save the date for this year's Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair: October 14-19, 2024!
