A group of community volunteers came together recently to show their appreciation for one of Bulloch County’s own Korean War era veterans, Danny Duncan.
Members of the Dexter Allen American Legion Post 90, Georgia Southern’s Student Veterans of America (SVA), Kappa Alpha fraternity, and the Georgia Southern University Police Department spent the morning assisting Duncan with yard work, home maintenance, and organizing tasks around his property.
The Volunteers worked side by side to clean up the yard, remove debris, and complete needed repairs, all in the spirit of giving back to a man who served his country during one of its most challenging military conflicts.
For the Student Veterans of America, Saturday’s effort was a direct reflection of their mission: supporting veterans through meaningful service and community engagement. SVA is a national organization with campus chapters, including at Georgia Southern’s Statesboro and Armstrong campuses.
The organization is dedicated to helping student veterans transition into academic life while continuing to serve their communities. Open to all military-affiliated students, including active duty, reserves, ROTC cadets, and military family members, the SVA provides a network for mentorship, advocacy, and volunteerism both on and off campus.
Dexter Allen Post 90 of the American Legion, which has served the local veteran community since 1919, was proud to join the effort. The post emphasizes continued service beyond active duty, encouraging veterans to serve their fellow citizens and uphold the values expressed in the Legion’s founding principles. Post members have long been active in community support efforts, particularly those honoring the service and sacrifice of veterans like Duncan.
Organizers from both SVA and the American Legion emphasized that they are always willing to assist local veterans in need, whether it’s through volunteer service, connecting them with resources, or simply showing up to lend a hand.
This project is just one of the many collaborations between SVA and Post 90. The two organizations are also inviting the public to their upcoming “End of Semester Bash” on Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Post 90.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, or cornhole sets and enjoy a cookout with student veterans and local Legion members.
