Bulloch County Animal Services (BCAS) hosted a huge adoption event on Saturday, July 12, gathering all the fluffy paws, wagging tails, twitching whiskers and excited woofs they could muster—hoping for nothing but the best as some of their furry friends find their forever homes!
The shelter, located at 81 Mill Creek Rd. in Statesboro, Georgia, featured 41 dogs and 12 cats available for adoption—each one bathed, vaccinated, treated for fleas, and photographed with sweet descriptions of their personalities. A total of 20 animals left the shelter thanks to this event!
Many were already spayed or neutered ahead of the event, and those who weren’t have appointments scheduled in the near future.
The shelter hosts a few adoption events each year, aiming for four annually to help clear space and raise awareness, said Amanda Anderson, the shelter supervisor.
Many people mistakenly believe the shelter is near Mill Creek Park, so staff hope events like this will remind the community of their actual location—especially so pet owners know where to look if their animals go missing. (Here's a link to its location. It's out 301N, near the Statesboro-Bulloch County Airport.)
Getting ready for this event took a lot of teamwork—volunteers helped get the animals ready throughout the week leading up to the adoption event and several community members joined in on the day of the event. A bouncy castle was donated by LeapJoy, Georgia Ice brought frozen treats to lure guests in, and Best Friends Animal Society came down to support BCAS.
Even for those who aren't looking to adopt, there are plenty of ways to help! BCAS encourages community members to volunteer, walk the dogs, bathe them, or simply stop by to socialize with animals. Sharing posts on Facebook also helps connect pets with potential adopters.
"You never know who on your Facebook might be looking for a dog or might be looking for a cat," said Anderson, who emphasized that even just allowing the animals to meet new faces can help prepare them for adoption.
Anderson noted that while the adoption process itself isn't long, it can take time for shelter animals to adjust to a new home. Some have lived with families before, while others clearly haven't and the transition can be overwhelming at first.
To help with this, BCAS provides paperwork with tips and guidelines for new pet owners and encourages patience throughout the adjustment period.
"Come on out, even after the adoption event," said Anderson. "We're open seven days a week—come volunteer, walk a dog, just come see us to say 'hi!'"
