City Council clears way for 69 single family houses to be constructed

The Statesboro City Council approved a Zoning Map Amendment for Ball Company LLC request to clear the way for 69 single family houses to be constructed in the city in their last regular meeting for this year on Tuesday, December 20, 2022.

The amendment changes the the property from R20/LI (Single-Family Residential/Light Industrial) zoning district to the R-6 (Single Family Residential) zoning district in order to construct approximately 69 single family homes on 32.16 acres of property at Timber Road off of Stockyard road near Julia P. APPROVED: Consideration of a motion to award a contract for engineering design of the N. Zetterower Street Sidewalk Improvements project to TR Long Engineering, P.C. in the amount of $42,380.00. The project will be paid from 2018 TSPLOST funds.

APPROVED:Consideration of a motion to award a contract for engineering design of the Max Lockwood Drive Roadway Improvements project to TR Long Engineering, P.C. in the amount of $47,440.00. The project will be paid from 2018 TSPLOST funds.

This project proposes to construct a two-lane configuration for Max Lockwood upgrading from the current one-way road Fair Road/SR 67 and ending at S. Zetterower Avenue. This project will including all stormwater drainage improvements to keep runoff from infiltrating into the front of the Honey Bowen building and adjustments to the existing stormwater structures to accommodate the new lane.

APPROVED:Consideration of a motion to award a contract to Jet-Vac Equipment Company Inc. for the purchase of a Jet Vac 900-ECO Truck Mounted Sewer Cleaning Truck per Sourcewell cooperative purchasing contract in the amount of $440,000.01. This item to be purchased with funds approved in the 2023 CIP Budget, item #WWD-77, funded by system revenues.

APPROVED: Consideration of a motion to award the purchase of 300 Water Meter Boxes to Core & Main in the amount of $73,173.00. To be purchased with funds approved in 2023 Operating Budget funded with system revenues.

City Managers Comments

Charles Penny, City Manager proposed setting a work session after the January 3, 2023 meeting which is a morning meeting to discuss raising the hotel motel tax and an update on the art park.

Dr. Dominique Halaby introduced the new small business recruiter for the city Allen Gross.

Allen Gross

The Mayors Toy Drive drop this past weekend helped over 50 families serving over 200 people to receive toys for their children. The project raised over $5,000 for the toy drive. On one of the list a child's request was a toothbrush and toothpaste for Christmas.

Public Comments

Marcus Toole with Habitat addressed the council to share about a $20,000 grant they received to offer will writing services for homeowners. He explained also that Habitat nationally has asked them to apply for a $300 grant to hire a social worker to work with citizens to help with homeowner retention.

Executive Session

The council voted to enter into executive session to discuss “Personnel Matters” “Real Estate” and/or “Potential Litigation” in accordance with O.C.G.A 50-14-3(b)

After the council reconvened, they voted to appoint the following members to the Statesboro Business Commission. They also voted to expand the commission from seven members to nine and removed the requirement for the Chamber of Commerce appointment.
